Layered Soup Jars - Mission / Service Idea
Posted by member CindyB
We have a Joseph rotation in our future so I've just started looking for some ideas...here's one that I have in my save folder..layered soup jars, where you take the dry ingredients and place them into wide mouth mason jars carefully so they look like sand art. Thinking that the kids could make 2; one to take home and one that we could give to either our food closet or our shut ins, and I would tie this into the brothers coming to Joseph for food.
Joseph Story Parfait
Member Lynn posted this idea from her "Cooking" Workshop:They created a 3 layer parfait, with each layer separated by a layer of pudding (student's choice, vanilla or chocolate). The pudding is the presence of God with Joseph in the three key episodes/challenges. Tip: Use clear "solo" style plastic cups.
1. "The Well" ...the bottom of the parfait cup has crushed cookies in it, representing Joseph's crushed feelings and loss of his family. Add a layer of pudding after the crushed cookies.
2. "In Jail in Egypt" ...the middle layer of the parfait cup has "bars" of mini pretzel sticks. The salt of the pretzels reminds us of Joseph's struggle and probably quite a few tears.
3. "In Charge in Egypt" ...the top layer begins with gummie bears which we pretended were the cows in Pharaoh's dream. I had wanted to make jello jigglers in the shape of cows but ran out of time. We topped the cows with more pudding and then a cherry on top. What is the "cherry on top" you ask? Ask your kids! It could be the reward for being faithful, or our reward for learning such an important story of faith.
"Joseph's Coat of Many Colors Treats" Idea
You could use Fruity Pebbles instead of Rice Krispies, or multi-color Rice Krispies if you can find them, to make "Fruity Pebbles 'Joseph's Coat of Many Colors' Treats". Each child could be given a piece of wax paper sprayed with cooking spray and about two cups of treat mixture. Spray each child's hands with the cooking spray and instruct the children to shape their treat into a coat on the wax paper. The marshmallow and margarine can be easily melted in the microwave using a big glass mixing bowl--no stove necessary.
Make plenty to share and have the kids come up with captions they can write on sandwich bags that capture the meaning of Joseph's Coat: his father's many blessings.
