It was the day for the Passover meal. Jesus told Peter and John, “Go and get the Passover meal ready for us to eat?” “Where do you want us to go to get it ready?” they asked him. Jesus answered, “As you go into the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him into the house that he enters. He will show you a large furnished room upstairs where you will find everything ready.” (Luke 22:7-13)
Before the meal Jesus wrapped a towel around his waist. He poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and dry them. This is a custom in Jewish homes in Jesus’ day. When he came to Peter, Peter said, “Are you going to wash my feet, Lord?” “If I do not wash your feet you will no longer be my disciple.” Hearing this Peter answered, “Lord, do not wash only my feet, then! Wash my hands and head too.” (John 13:2-9)
When Jesus had finished washing the disciples’ feet he asked them, “Do you understand what I have just done to you?” You call me Teacher and Lord and I have washed your feet. You then, should wash one another’s feet. No slave is greater than his master and no messenger greater than the one who sends him. (John 13:12-16)
In the evening, while Jesus and the disciples were sharing the Passover meal, Jesus took a piece of bread, gave a prayer of thanks, broke it and gave it to his disciples. “Take and eat it,” he said, “this is my body.” Then Jesus took the cup, gave thanks to God, and gave it to them. “Drink it, all of you,” he said, “this is my blood which seals God’s covenant.” (Matt. 26:26-28) [Note that a picture from Jesus feeding the 5000 is used here, as there is not a small 400px version of the Vallotton Last Supper/Breaking Bread drawing.]
During the meal Jesus said, “One of you will betray me.” The disciples are very upset and one by one asked him, “Surely Lord you don’t mean me?” Judas spoke up, “Surely, Teacher, you don’t mean me?” Jesus answered, “So you say.” (Matt.26:22, 25)
During his last meal with the disciples Jesus said, “One of you will betray me.” The disciples became very upset and began to ask him one after the other, “Surely, Lord, you don’t mean me.” Jesus answered, “One who dips his bread in the dish with me will betray me.” (Matt. 26:20-23)
After Jesus had said this he was deeply troubled and declared, “One of you is going to betray me.” The disciples looked at one another completely puzzled. Peter asked John, who was sitting close to Jesus, to ask Jesus who he is talking about. Judas left the room. (John 13:21-30)
