The story of Jesus walking on water

ADULT BIBLE STUDY

There is an adult study by John Ortberg called "If You Want to Walk on Water You Have to Get Out of the Boat" by Zondervan.  It's a 6-week study, and would be a very nice companion piece for adults while the children are doing their workshops. [Contributed by Julie Burton]

ART

CRAFT FOR YOUNGER KIDSPicture

  • Create a picture with a movable Peter. They could also make a picture of themselves to put in boat for additional discussion. I've attached this picture idea I did years ago, shown on the right (I've replaced the cloud message to reflect my new understanding from the 2016 Writing Team's Bible Background and Lesson Set.  A PDF attachment labeled "Art Picture Jesus Walking on Water.pdf" can be found at the end of this post).  [Contributed by Luanne Payne]
  • Do a search on the site Danielle's Place. Here is one possible link. [Contributed by Carol Hulbert]

DECORATING

Bible Posters: PeterPoster (shown on the left) - "Peter Walks on Water" (24" wide x 36" tall on heavy paper).  Available from artist's "Real Hero Studios" website.  Great for your movie theater or anywhere else.

DIORAMA

What is a Diorama Workshop? Look in the "Workshop Design & Resources" Forum - under "OTHER Workshop Concepts" link.

“Galilee Boat Set” (Tales of Glory Series), by One To Believe, 603154506338.  Also sometimes called “Galilean Boat with Apostles Play Set” by Cactus Game Design or "Galilee Boat 15 Piece Playset by BibleToys" on Amazon.com.  Includes plastic boat with removable sail, figures of 12 disciples & Jesus.  I use the figures that come with this for lots of different bible stories so it’s well worth buying.

Note:  Jesus figure is included, he just isn't in this picture.

DRAMA

  • Water Fabric, Group Publishing, Outlet Mall, 9780764491061, 54 in. x 108 in. Great for any bible story involving water.blacklight-example
  • BLACKLIGHTS - Check out link here in the "Blacklight Manual" at this site, for details of how we used Blacklights in drama for "Jesus Walking on Water" to the song "Footprints on the Water".

MAPS and PICTURES

  • Maps of the Sea of Galilee here. [Contributed by Carol Hulbert]
  • Bible Places website: Photos of the region of the Sea of Galilee, including a picture of a reconstructed 1st century boat discovered on site. [Contributed by Carol Hulbert]

MUSIC

  • Water Walkin’ (Kidz Tracks) by Daywind (Key E), 614187921227. Love it!  Really upbeat (Southern Gospel – originally by Sherri Easter).  Tells the story, also has lines around "not doubting" and "keeping your eyes on God".
  • Footprints on the Water song used in a blacklight production - lyrics and information included in "Blacklight Manual" here.
  • Strolling on the Water by Bryan Duncan.  Can be found on his CD title, "The Last Time I was Here," Word Entertainment, 080688588120.  It's probably at least 10 years old, but is pretty cool in the way it conveys the idea of walking on the water with Jesus. [Contributed by Joy Feemster]

SCIENCE

  • Check out this"Will It Float?" lesson.

During a renovation in the Noah forum, I added the "Will It Float" demonstration playing on "sinking and floating metaphors."  Far more suited for the Peter Walks on Water story.  [Contributed by Neil MacQueen]

STORY BOOKS

  • Remember When Jesus Walked On The Sea, by Jonathan Lee, (Remember Series), CWR, 9781853453625.

Mrs. Phips, the school teacher, tells her class about Jesus' amazing miracle of walking on water. This book reminds us that with Jesus as our Saviour we don't need to be scared of the stormy seas of life. Just as Jesus calmed the storm and reassured the disciples, so He can restore peace and calm to our lives.

  • Jesus Walks on the Water (Arch Books), by Nancy I Sanders, Concordia, 1995, 9780570075011.

Retelling of the story of Jesus walking on water (Matthew 14:22-23; Mark 6:45-51).

  • A Walk on the Waves: Jesus Walks on Water, (Hear Me Read Level 2), By: Dennis Jones, Concordia, 1993, 9780570047353.

  • Go, Go, Fish! (I’m Not Afraid) by Dandi Daley Mackall, Tommy Nelson, 9781400310104 (HC), 9781400306268 (PA)  (OUT OF PRINT).

Tells the story of a fish named Felipe who is afraid of the light. But when Felipe sees Jesus and Peter walk on the water, Felipe learns to trust the true Light of the world.
Also helps parents teach Christian-based coping skills when handling the childhood fear of the dark.

VIDEO (Movies)

Idea - as there is not a DVD that just covers this story - do a comparison of different clips from different movies to assist with discussion.

Matthew's Version

  • The Miracles of Jesus (Nest)

Chapter 10 Approx. 2:37 mins. (18:11-20:48)

Quiz Questions Set #1 - Question 7

Quiz Questions Set #2 - Questions 8, 9, 10

  • Matthew DVD (Visual Bible)

Event 42 (1st DVD) right at end

Here is a link to the pdf file of Event Breakdowns of the Matthew (Visual Bible) DVD.  You can cut it in half and stick inside the front of each DVD for future reference.  DVD does not come with a printout, I typed this up for myself and thought I'd share. [contributed by Luanne Payne]

  • Miracles of Jesus (Greatest Adventures)

21:38 - 23:44 (Approx.)

  • Fish Eyes (Ted & Co. Theater Works)

Clip called "Walk on Water/Boat Ride".  Length not known.

Can be downloaded off Ted & Co. Theater Works website or is included on the "Fish Eyes" DVD.

  • Son of God (2014 theatrical release). About 5 minutes of the story.  [Contributed by Neil MacQueen]

  • Miracles of Jesus (Read and Share DVD Bible Series)

Chapter 6 (1:55 mins) - could include Chapter 1 as an intro on Miracles as well.  Note: This story is also included in the Read and Share Series DVD Vol. #4.

  • Great Storyteller (Visual Bible for Kids) (OUT OF PRINT) Placed here for those who have this in their library.
With a gleam in his eye, an avalanche of unworkable teaching aids, and a little help from God, master storyteller Frank Peretti (in his acting debut as a bumbling Sunday School teacher), takes his wide-eyed class inside the greatest story of all and introduces them to a laughing, loving, very-real Jesus--a they become eye witnesses to healing of the leper, the feeding of the 5,000, Jesus calming the storm and walking on water.

John's Version (Does not include Peter Walking on Water)

  • Gospel of John (Visual Bible)

Chapter 6 (Feeding 5000 & Walking on Water)

Walking on Water (47:10 - 49:19)

Secular Suggestions  [Contributed by Neil MacQueen]

  • "MONSTERS INC" (Pixar)

The scene where the monsters are practicing how to scare children.  Why do some kids frighten and others don't?  Sulley and Mike the monsters accidentally let the young toddler named "Boo" into monsterland where the monsters are afraid of her.

Does God allow monsters and ghosts? (NO!) God is in charge of the world.

Video Picture Storybook

  • Monsters and Me: Fear Stops Here (Toby Adventures) DVD, BugBox Animation (Word Entertainment),  091037089960.  – one of the extras on this DVD is a Picture Storybook – “Jesus Walks on Water”.  2 minutes.

It’s simply the story narrated scanning over stationary pictures but with background music and sound effects (with a modern day looking Jesus – same Jesus used in the Toby movies) follows scripture.  2 minutes exactly.  Jesus does not rebuke Peter.

"Monsters and Me - Fear Stops Here", is a 27 min movie where Jesus uses the story of "calming the storm" to help Toby with his fear.
