Preschooler and Younger Children Creation Story Music Activities

Genesis 1:1 - 2:3

God created the world and us to share his joy and enjoy the beauty of life that reveals his glory.

First, use a Bible storybook to read the Story of Creation to your students.

7Days-TemplateSecond, give each student a copy of the "7 Days Illustration Template" (attached) and some markers. As you very briefly mention and discuss each day, have them quickly illustrate each day.

Day 1: day and night
Day 2: sky and clouds
Day 3: land, plants, and sea
Day 4: sun, moon, and stars
Day 5: fish and birds
Day 6: animals and people
Day 7: God rested and said it was good!

Questions and Comments  for each day:

  • Why do you think God created that?
  • Do you like those things?
  • When you see them, how do they make you feel?  (God made Creation to reveal his heart to us. Each wonderful thing in Creation sings his praise and makes us pause to consider how wonderful God is and the gift of beauty and wonder he has surrounded us with. God even created "rest" so that we/he could look back and enjoy Creation. This is a very common theme throughout the Bible.)

Here are the 7 Days of Creation set to the song, "He's Got the Whole World in His Hands"

Before singing the song, have students decide which hand motions should go with that particular day. Write these on the board using a word or two to help you or the kids remember.

1. He's got the whole world in his hands,

He's got the whole world in His hands,
He's got the whole world in His hands,
He's got the whole world in His hands.

2. He's got the day and the night in His hands,

3. He's got the sky and the clouds in His hands,

4. He's got the land, plants, and sea in His hands,

5. He's got the sun, moon, and stars in His hands,

6. He's got the fish and the birds in His hands,

7. He's got the animals and people in His hands,

8. On the seventh day He rested and said it was good,
On the seventh day He rested and said it was good,
On the seventh day He rested and said it was good,
He made the whole world in His hands!

Creation Story Songs for Preschoolers

Member Dana posted the following question about "looking for songs about Creation for preschoolers" and we've consolidated member answers below. Feel free to post your suggestion by hitting the "reply" button at the bottom of this topic.

Member Dana asked:
I am looking for a very simple CREATION SONG SUGGESTIONS FOR 2/3 YEAR-OLDS. Something that has some movement/action and sung to the tune of a familiar song would be a great big plus.

Somewhere I remember using the praise song "GOD IS SO GOOD" and then add the following verses:

Thank God for sunshine,
Thank God for sunshine,
Thank God for sunshine,
He's so good to us.

And then continue with thanking Him for other aspects of creation...the sky....nighttime... big trees....

let the kids come up with what they are thankful for.

PIGGY BACK SONG BOOKS have two great books--one with Jesus songs and one about God. The simple songs are to be sung to familiar tunes like London Bridge, Farmer in the Dell, Row Row Row Your Boat, etc.

I would recommend the Piggy Back Songs listed at the back of AUGSBURG FORTRESS'S "LIFESONGS" (It goes with their Sunday School curriculum, but the songs are great other places! Especially for churches with a liturgical worship style.)

I've used this with toddlers as young as 14 months, making up motions to go with each verse. (They love to creep on the floor with verse 5!) Even if they don't sing, they seem to get the idea. (words removed due to copyright)

All Things Bright and Beautiful has been put to music. It's in the United Methodist Hymnal.

Here are some other ideas:
Cokesbury's 2002 VBS -- God's Great Gallery!
The CD has the following songs that would fit:
* Come and See What God Has Done
* God's Great Gallery
* I Am a Masterpiece
* Living in the Middle of God's Creation
* Wow! Look What God Has Done
* Why Did God Make Worms?
* Shout to the Lord
* This is the Day

Children's Creation Story Song and "Tapestry"

I had a powerful creation lesson with this age group based on the song "Before There Were Roses" by Ken Medema.

You could also use Saddleback Kids' "Creation Song" for early childhood (has arm motions). See its video below.

Links to the Medema song clip:

Medema's song on YOUTUBE:

The idea in Ken Medema's lyrics is that before everything there was God- the weaver- and God's plan, and that He weaves everything together in an "infinite tapestry." I explained what a "tapestry" was and showed them a picture of one.

It is a really neat-sounding song- you can feel the "weaving."

  • As they listen to the song, have the kids write down everything "created" that they hear in the song.
  • We then talked about tapestriesand discussed the idea that each one of them was part of God's created tapestry- part of his beautiful design.
  • Editor Adds:  Now make a "Creation Tapestry" using squares of loose burlap or a "group tapestry table" where all the kids work to weave yarn into the burlap to create a Creation Story Tapestry (see photo below). The resulting tapestry won't win any awards, but it will put the story into memory and produce a shareable-discussionable result!

Creation

Music Workshop

Summary of Lesson Activities:

To experience the story of creation by singing songs and playing a musical game to the tune, "Farmer in the Dell."

Scripture Reference:

Genesis 1:1-2:3

Leader Preparation:

  • Read the scripture ahead of time.
  • Gather the materials.

Supplies List:

  • CD “All-time Favorites,” music and tape for the following songs:
    • “Everything Was Made by God,”
    • “Clap Your Hands”
    • “God Is So Good”

Moderator Note: "All-Time Favorites" does not appear to be available. "Clap Your Hands" and "God is So Good" are found on many other CDs and as MP3 downloads on Christian Book Distributing.

Lesson Plan

Opening

Greet the children and Introduce yourself. Sing some warm-up songs. You can find these on the CD “All-time Favorites,” # 32, 36, 37, 38

Dig

Talk briefly about the story of creation, referring to the Bible passages. Use the children’s Bible for younger children. Ask the children some general questions: what kinds of things did God make? How long did it take God?

Sing some songs about creation: #10, 14, and 40 off the CD (words are in the CD insert, and you can make enlarged copies on the church copier). Also sing the three songs with music and tape - “Everything was made by God,” “Clap your Hands” and “God is so good. As you sing these songs, ask the children questions about what these songs tell us about God and about creation.

Play the following game: To the tune of “The Farmer in the Dell,” sing this:

God made the ________
God made the ________
Back when the world was new
God made the ________

You can go around in a circle and have each child give a suggestion. You can also have them act out what they are saying: an animal, rain, sun, etc. You can also try having the child act it out without saying it and seeing if the rest of the group can guess what they’re doing. For the older kids have them draw it out, like a game of pictionary. Added fun: blindfold the artist!

If you have more time, try this activity: while someone reads excerpts from the creation story (the children’s bible may be a good thing to use here, for all ages), have the rest of the group use instruments to “create” background sound effects to go along with the story (wind, rain, light, animals, etc.)

Closing:

Review what they learned today. Close with prayer.

Days of Creation Song

(sing to the tune of Partridge in a Pear Tree)

On the first day of Creation
God made for you and me
Dark and light
So that we could all see!

On the second day of creation
God made for you and me
Skies above
And dark and light
So that we could all see!

On the third day of creation
God made for you and me
Dry land and plants
Skies above
And dark and light
So that we could all see!

On the fourth day of creation
God made for you and me
The sun, moon and stars
Dry land and plants
Skies above
And dark and light
So that we could all see!

On the fifth day of creation
God made for you and me
Birds to fly
Fish in the seas
The sun, moon and stars
Dry land and plants
Skies above
And dark and light
So that we could all see!

On the sixth day of creation
God made for you and me
Animals and Adam
Birds to fly
Fish in the seas
The sun moon and stars
Dry land and plants
Skies above
And dark and light
So that we could all see!

On the seventh day of creation
God made for me
A day of rest, (fake snore)
And that’s ev-e-ry-thing!

God is with Me         (London Bridges tune)

God is with me every day,

When I sleep and when I play.

God is with me every day,

So I praise Him

Creation Canon /Round (to the tune of "For health and strength")

For sun and sky, and moon and stars, We give you thanks oh Lord;

For land and sea, and rocks and trees, We give you thanks oh Lord;

For frogs and pups, and cows and ducks, We give you thanks oh Lord;

For Adam and Eve, for you and me, We give you thanks oh Lord;

For Family and Friends so dear,  We give you thanks oh Lord.

One way to turn the Creation Canon into a great lesson is to have groups of kids come up with their own lyrics for this fun 'round' of a song.

Third Day's "God of Wonders" is a terrific contemporary ode to Creation.  Here's one fan video with images of creation and the lyrics.  There are others on Youtube.

These make great discussion starters, intros, or devotionals in classroom or children's worship. They are particularly impressive when projected large and played on a good set of speakers.

See the "Art Workshop" lesson idea for illustrating the lyrics of this song.

A Devotional Song for Contemplating the Story and Meaning of Creation

Hillsong's 2018 mega-hit "SO WILL I (100 BILLION X)" is a beautiful  reflection on the majesty of God's Creation and lesson about Creation's purpose --to show us God’s heart and how we are to respond. Hence the title of the song "So Will I."

"Every painted sky
A canvas of Your grace"

“If it all reveals Your nature so will I”

The lyrics also connect the meaning of Creation to the message of the Cross. Terrific graphics too from this fan-produced lyrics-on-screen video.

See the lyrics below with some of my favorite highlighted for discussion.

Lyrics pasted here for the purposes of commentary (i.e. a protected fair use)
God of creation
There at the start
Before the beginning of time
With no point of reference
You spoke to the dark
And fleshed out the wonder of light
And as You speak
A hundred billion galaxies are born
In the vapour of Your breath the planets form
If the stars were made to worship, so will I
I can see Your heart in everything You've made
Every burning star
A signal fire of grace
If creation sings Your praises, so will I
God of Your promise
You don't speak in vain
No syllable empty or void
For once You have spoken
All nature and science
Follow the sound of Your voice
And as You speak
A hundred billion creatures catch Your breath
Evolving in pursuit of what You said
If it all reveals Your nature so will I
I can see Your heart in everything You say
Every painted sky
A canvas of Your grace
If creation still obeys You, so will I
So will I
So will I
If the stars were made to worship, so will I
If the mountains bow in reverence, so will I
If the oceans roar Your greatness, so will I
For if everything exists to lift You high, so will I
If the wind goes where You send it, so will I
If the rocks cry out in silence, so will I
If the sum of all our praises still falls shy
Then we'll sing again a hundred billion times
God of salvation
You chased down my heart
Through all of my failure and pride
On a hill You created
The Light of the world
Abandoned in darkness to die
And as You speak
A hundred billion failures disappear
Where You lost Your life so I could find it here
If You left the grave behind You, so will I
I can see Your heart in everything You've done
Every part designed in a work of art called love
If You gladly chose surrender, so will I
I can see Your heart, a billion different ways
Every precious one, a child You died to save
And if You gave Your life to love them so will I
Like You would again a hundred billion times
But what measure could amount to Your desire?
You're the One who never leaves the one behind
