Please post your Proverb lesson ideas and resources here.

Note:

Proverbs are not usually taught in the typical Rotation Model church for a number of reasons:

1. In Rotation, we teach one passage for four to five weeks, and thus, must prioritize which stories we choose to teach. In a traditional program their are 52 scripture passages in a year. In Rotation, maybe 12, but we cover them more in-depth, and in more memorable ways.

2. Proverbs tend to teach truths which are found in other passages, and particularly, in stories which are easier to remember and richer in detail.  It's a lot easier to develop creative lessons on a story than a one-liner.

3. Many great proverbs can be taught in other teaching venues, such as, fellowship groups, and children's sermons.

All that said, each Rotation church chooses what it wants to teach, and if you have good Proverbs lessons and resources to share, please do!

Solomon's Proverbs Cookies Idea

Another idea you can use for the wisdom of Solomon is to make Proverbs Cookies (fortune cookies). The idea is not original to me, and I really thought I'd found it here, but I guess not since I didn't find it in a search of the archives.

We're doing Solomon in September (going along with our back to school theme as well). We plan to use this as a cooking workshop.

The lesson plan will go something like:
1. greet children
2. pray with children
3. read several proverbs, discuss meaning
4. discuss application to our lives today
5. practice writing proverbs as group
6. write proverbs on slips of paper for cookies
7. make "cookies" (slip in paper)
8. eat a cookie or two and save the rest to hand out at our monthly "friendship lunch" for visitors.
9. clean up
10. prayer & journal time

Fortune Cookie Recipe

Here is the recipe for the fortune cookies updated and tested by the Rotation.org Writing Team using the following tested recipe. Unlike OTHER recipes online, this one does not use butter or oil. Doing so makes your fortune cookies into fortune pancakes!  Stick with egg whites, flour, sugar, salt, and vanilla.

Ingredients for 10 cookies, double or triple for more

2 large egg whites
½ teaspoon vanilla extract
½ cup all purpose flour
½ cup sugar
1 pinch salt
3 tablespoons water

Preheat the oven to 425˚F (220˚C).

Add the egg whites and vanilla extract to a medium bowl and use a whisk or hand mixer to beat until frothy, about 1 minute.

Sift in the flour, sugar, and salt through a fine-mesh sieve.

Using a spatula, gently incorporate into the batter until paste-like.

Add the water carefully --only as much as is need, 1 teaspoon at a time, until the batter is smooth and falls into ribbons when the spatula is picked up.

Place 1 tablespoon of batter onto a silicone baking sheet sheet and spread into a 3-inch (7-cm) circle.
Repeat with another tablespoon of batter getting as many cookies on the sheet as you can. They will not spread out much at all.

Bake for 8 minutes, until the edges become slightly golden brown. Keep an eye on them. Do not over-bake as they will start to harden in the oven.

Working immediately and quickly, use a spatula to remove the cookies from the pan.

Add a fortune in the middle then quickly fold the cookies in half.

Then, use your finger to fold them into the traditional shape or place the flat side on the lip of a cup, folding the edges down into a fortune cookie shape.

Place the folded fortune cookies in a mini muffin tin until cooled to retain their shape.

As they quickly cool the sugar in them will start to harden very quickly.

Repeat with remaining batter.

Of course, our cookies don't tell the future!  They only share messages of faith and wisdome.
